Ram Singh died due to hanging: autopsy report

Delhi gang rape accused Ram Singh died due to hanging, police sources said on Tuesday, quoting the initial post-mortem report. The autopsy of the accused, who allegedly committed suicide inside Tihar jail on Monday, was conducted at AIIMS on Tuesday morning. The body was handed over to his family who said they will take the mortal remains to Karauli in Rajasthan.

The postmortem started at around 11:15 in the morning and ended at 12:30 pm. A panel of three doctors conducted Ram Singh’s post-mortem. They said the initial report suggested that Singh, 33, ‘committed suicide’. ‘He died due to hanging,’ sources said quoting the report. According to a doctor, who conducted the post mortem, ‘There were no external injury marks on his body.’

However, Ram Singh’s brother, who came to AIIMS to receive the body alleged that he was murdered and that he saw injury marks on his body and finger marks on his neck.

‘My brother was murdered. I have seen injury marks on the body and finger marks on the throat,’ said Singh’s brother.

Singh was found hanging in his cell in Tihar Jail at around 5:45 am on Monday and the body was brought to AIIMS in the evening after the completion of proceedings.

The postmortem could not be conducted immediately as the Delhi police could not submit the required papers to the hospital on time.

According to a source, Dr Sanjeev Lalwani and Dr DN Bhardwaj were among the doctors on the panel. According to AIIMS, the autopsy report will be given to police or the judiciary ‘within a couple of days’.

He was arrested 17 December, a day after the brutal gang-rape of a medical student which ignited protests across India. A magisterial enquiry has been ordered into Ram Singh’s death.

Meanwhile, a special watch has been mounted on the four others accused in the Delhi gang-rape case in Tihar jail following the alleged suicide of the main accused, said an official. ‘They are on special watch and an officer has been deputed to keep a tab on their activities,’ said a jail official. ‘We are focussing a CCTV camera on their cell to increase surveillance on them,’ he added. The watch is meant to prevent the four from causing possible harm to themselves.
