Rahul Gandhi arrives in Bilaspur, accuses state govrnment of cover-up

‘The truth is this is not only a case of negligence but also of corruption. Corruption played a role, fake medicines played a role,’ he said. ‘And that is the government’s fault.’

‘It is the government’s job to organise camps,’ Rahul said. ‘The camps were not properly run. The government is not taking responsibility, instead medicines are being burnt and a cover-up is taking place.’

Police had earlier in the week arrested the director of the pharma company that had supplied the antibiotic given to the women after their tubectomies and which is now thought might have been responsible for their deaths. When police got to the pharma company’s manufacturing unit, they had found that a large quantity of medicines had been burnt on the premises. Initial tests on the medicines had later found that they contained traces of zinc phosphide, an ingredient used in making rat poison.

Earlier during the day, Rahul had visited Amsena villages and condoled with families there who had lost relatives. Later, speaking to the Press, he said that ‘the people I met in the villages, it was very sad to hear what they had to say. When a mother suffers, the entire family suffers.’
