Private firm fails, locals to collect garbage

Now that the contracting private company experiment to collect the garbage has flopped, the South Delhi Municipal Corporation [SDMC] has decided to engage local youths and local bodies as individual contractors to collect the household garbage in its area. The corporation would soon come up with a resolution, which is expected to give employment to hundreds of underprivileged youths.

‘It will give employment to local youths and also improve sanitation as they are familiar with local streets and residents would also be able to keep a tab on them,’ said Rajesh Gehlot, Chariman of Standing Committee, SDMC. The corporation has also ordered the purchase of 276 small vehicles to pick the garbage in its six zones. According to senior officials, resident welfare associations [RWAs] and housing societies could also take the contract. ‘The purpose is to localise garbage collection,’ added Gehlot.

MCD had engaged a concessionaire to collect household garbage in Sectors 22 and 24 in Dwarka two years ago. It was a pilot project. The same concessionaire was also assigned the duties in Rohini and some other areas of north Delhi. Repeated complaints from RWAs and housing societies compelled SDMC to go for cancellation, but the concessionaire assessed the mood of corporation and surrendered the contract.
