Price rise top issue among Delhi’s housewives

Price rise of essential items was one of the issues that ousted Congress led UPA government and a substantial chunk of women had voted taking the issue in mind during May 2014. And it is election time again in Delhi and housewives are not happy and are complaining about high vegetable prices and adulterated food. This may not be music to the ears of BJP.

“The food is highly adulterated these days whether it is milk, vegetables or pulses. These are basic things and at least good quality stuff should be supplied. The government should also bring down the budget of kitchen by bringing prices of essential food items,” said Indira Yadav, a resident in Janakpuri. In January, 2015 itself, the vegetable prices in capital rose by at least 50 per cent. The rise in prices was attributed to export of vegetables to neighbouring countries and bad weather which lead to poor food crop production.

“We buy gas once a month or so but vegetables are brought daily. Vegetables prices should be moderated,” said Rajesh Kumari, a resident of Shahdara. Besides, these cleanliness and sanitation are also a major problem in colonies. “Dumping of garbage has often led to fights in colonies. The sanitation workers come do not come regularly and garbage is left to rot on the roadside. “The local markets and women toilets are always unclean and dirty,” said Savita Kumar, another resident of Shahdara. With over 58 lakh voters women constitute 44.57 per cent in the voter list.

The house makers are however, praise the decision of the government to credit the gas subsidy directly in the bank accounts but some also raised their concerns on less number of subsidised cylinders. “You can’t get two gas connections at the same address so it is become difficult to manage in nine cylinders,” said Ragini, a resident in East Delhi. The housewives who are living on rent are more worried and they can’t get the gas connection so are forced to buy it in black. “The landlords don’t allow us to get certificates of address proofs like ration cards and bank accounts which are necessity to get a gas connection,” said Nisha, a resident of Okhla.
