Post taint, BCCI goes for Big Game Hunting

Money flew like free birds on day one of the two-day IPL auction in Bengaluru on Wednesday with Yuvraj Singh fetching the costliest ever bid in IPL history, a whopping Rs 14 crore, and was pocketed by Royal Challengers Bangalore. Home team Delhi Daredevils captured the next two biggest catches, Dinesh Karthik for a jaw-dropping Rs 12.5 crore and England discard batting hero Kevin Pietersen for Rs nine crore.

After the Mudgal Committee report, submitted to SC on Tuesday, indicted Gurunath Meiyappan on charges of betting, all eyes were on BCCI chief and CSK MD N Srinivasan. However, the man in question sat looking unfluttered at the CSK corner. He later left for Hyderabad to appear before a special CBI court on an alleged quid-pro-quo investment case involving YSR Congress chief YSR Jaganmohan Reddy’s firmshere.

Meanwhile, in-form Oz pace spearhead Mitchell Johnson joined Kings XI Punjab (KXIP), bagging a handsome Rs 6.5 crore. Johnson’s compatriot and last year’s biggest buy Glenn Maxwell rounded off the top five bracket, also going to KXIP for Rs six crore.

New Zealand all-rounder Corey Anderson, one of the hottest properties this year for smashing the fastest century in ODI history (36 balls) recently, got a decent package of Rs 4.5, joining Mumbai Indians. Among the big falls, Virender Sehwag suffered a shock, signing for Kings XI Punjab for only Rs 3.2 crore. Some other big names, Sri Lanka’s Mahela Jayawardene, New Zealand’s Ross Taylor, Marlon Samuels of WI and last year’s Sunrises skipper Cameroon White of Australia found no buyers.

Also among big losers were the Pathan brothers, Irfan and Yusuf. While Yusuf, who fetched $2.1 m from KKR in 2011, had to settle for a mere Rs 3.25 crore with the same outfit, Irfan went to Sunrisers Hyderabad for Rs 2.4 The auction was attended by celebrities from different walks of life including Preity Zinta, Juhi Chawla, Vijay Mallya, Nita Ambani, Rahul Dravid and Anil Kumble, among others.
