Police tighten security ahead of New Year

The city police have made an elaborate plan to tighten up the security arrangements to avoid any untoward incident in the city in the first week of the New Year.

Arrangements have also been done for security of people who will gather at Park Street area on December 31 night. Sources said that the city police have received an alert from the central agencies about a possible terror attack. Similar alerts have been given to other states as well.

Policemen in plainclothes will be posted at important places including shopping malls, railway stations, metro stations and government establishments. Police pickets will be deployed at the entry and exit points of the city. Policemen posted at the pickets will check vehicles entering or leaving the city. 

Additional policemen will be posted to avoid any untoward incident at places like Alipore Zoological Garden and Echo Park where hundreds of people gather on holidays. 

Hundreds of people from different parts of the state visit Park Street on December 31 night. Police have demarcated the area into five zones for better management. 

Additional 8,000 to 10,000 policemen will be deployed in the city on December 31 and January 1. Around 1000 policemen will be on duty at Park Street. There will be around eight Quick Response Team, Heavy Radio Flying Squads and Radio Flying Squads at Park Street.
