Police constable commits suicide in Jalpaiguri

A 34-year-old police constable committed suicide by setting herself on fire in her house at Pandapara in Jalpaiguri on Monday.

Police said the victim Mukti Roy was posted at Kotwali police station in Jalpaiguri and she was sent to Darjeeling along with others from the police station for special police arrangements during the Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s visit.

She fell ill while staying in Darjeeling on Sunday afternoon. Thus she took a special permission from the local police station in Darjeeling and returned home in the evening.

Her family members told the police that she was unwell when she returned home and she was mentally depressed as well. Her family members, however, couldn’t give any reason which led to her depression. She took dinner and went to sleep.

Around 2.30 am her husband Kankan Roy got burning smells from the toilet. He also found smoke billowing out from there. He was shocked to find that his wife had set himself on fire. She was immediately taken to Jalpaiguri Hospital, where she was declared brought dead.

Paresh Burman, a family member of the victim, said it seemed that she committed suicide as she was suffering from depression.

Her has been sent for post-mortem. A probe has been initiated in this connection. A police officer said investigating officers would also speak to Mukti’s colleagues, who were with her in Darjeeling, to know whether they had found anything suspicious in her behavior.
