Pawan Bansal not above suspicion: CBI

Former railway minister Pawan Kumar Bansal was questioned on Tuesday by the Central Bureau of Investigations (CBI) for over eight hours in connection with the note-for-post scam. The central investigating agency made it clear that the former minister was not above 'suspicion'.

The CBI director Ranjit Sinha said, 'We will be able to decide whether he is an accused or witness in the case only after our interrogation is over.'

CBI spokesperson said Bansal was questioned as 'they are probing his role, if any, in the railway scam'. CBI summoned Bansal to Jam Nagar House at Akbar Road to evade media at 11 am on Tuesday and Bansal left the office at about 7.30 pm. Investigating officials confronted Bansal with documents and interceptions which the agency had recorded for several days.

However, Bansal, the CBI sources said, has denied all allegations against him and maintained that he has done no wrong in the appointment of Mahesh Kumar as member of the railway board, a post equivalent to the secretary in government.

The ex-railway minister has also reportedly told the CBI that he has 'lost touch' with his nephew Vijay Singla, who was caught red-handed by the CBI, and that he was not aware whether Singla had carried out any deals in his name.
