‘Party time’ on campus as DU goes to vote

It’s the last day for University of Delhi (DU) students to party as Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) elections will be held on Friday.

‘Today, four buses were parked near the college gate. I went to fun ’n food village. After the bus got filled up, some members of Akhil Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) came and told us to vote for their panel. Not only today, earlier also they took students to watch the movie Mary Kom and to an amusement park in Sonipat.

Both National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) and ABVP buses are stationed outside college during DUSU elections. Since tickets are free, students are lured by it,’ said a student of Rajdhani College in west Delhi. Apart from giving notepads and pens to students, NSUI and ABVP, the two main rivals in DUSU polls, have often relied on such tactics as distributing freebies to get votes.

‘ABVP which claims that they are very sincere about student issues violates all rules. Recently, they took students to Jurasik Park in Sonipat. They also booked PVR at Janakpuri and Satyam cinema at Patel Nagar and provided free movie tickets to students. Not only that, they are also distributing alcohol among students. On Wednesday and Thursday, they sent alcohol in Mansarover hostel in North campus,’ said Sanjay Poddar, NSUI spokeperson.

All India Students’ Association (AISA), which is associated with Communist Party of India (Marxist–Leninist), says their motive is to make students politically aware and have free and fair elections in DU. ‘Students are disgusted by such politics. Both the parties -ABVP and NSUI- violate rules of Lyngdoh Committee and no action has been taken

against them. This time students are firm on rejecting these forces,’ said Sunny Kumar, Delhi State secretary, AISA.
