Over 2,700 nominations for S R Jindal Prize

Sitaram Jindal Foundation, on Monday announced that it will screen 2,751 nominations it has received this year from across the country for the S R Jindal Prize 2012. The prize scheme has received a massive response in its second year of institution. There is a quantum increase of over 40 per cent in the nominations vis-a-vis last year. A seven- member jury under the chairmanship of former CJI Justice R C Lahoti will decide on the awardees  across seven categories for prizes worth Rs 8 crore. As  many as 27 people were honoured last year, including former president Dr APJ Kalam, Justice Santosh Hegde and Anna Hazare.

The nominations were open to the public between 1 March and 16 May 2012 and those received after the last date would be considered for next year. The S R Jindal Prize is dedicated to honour exemplary contribution towards social upliftment.

The prizes will be bestowed for the following categories - agriculture, rural development and poverty alleviation, healthcare including drugless healing and nature care, education  with emphasis on moral upliftment, science, technology and environment, peace, social harmony and social development, crusade against corruption and exemplary service to mankind in any field.

The winners will be selected through a three-tier process, wherein the decision of the independent jury will be final and binding.

Last year, a total of 1,971 nominations were received and the foundation honoured 27 outstanding selfless workers. Those honoured included individuals and institutions who are beacons of selfless service to the society.

Patron of Sitaram Jindal Foundation and CMD of Jindal Aluminum, Dr Sitaram Jindal set aside Rs 125 crore last year to form a corpus of fund to create a perpetual prize to honour the deserving, year after year. Further details are available at www.jindalprize.org.

Established in 1969, the Sitaram Jindal Foundation is an apolitical, non-religious and charitable trust in the field of education, health and social service.
