One dead, 48 injured in two different road accidents

One person was killed and around 48 persons were injured in two separate road accidents across the state. Police said that an accident took place at Habibpur in Malda on Saturday night when a vehicle that was carrying people to a marriage party lost its control and hit a roadside tree. The driver of the vehicle Bapan Haldar (30) had died at the spot while 18 others who were travelling in the vehicle had received injuries. They were rushed to the Malda Medical College and Hospital. According to the doctors in the hospital, the condition of some patients is stated to be serious.

Police said that the victims were all the residents of Rishipur village and were going to attend a marriage party. At around 10 pm on Saturday, they started off their journey. When they were passing through Begunbari area, the vehicle they were travelling in lost control and hit a roadside tree. The locals rushed to their rescue and took them to the hospital. The inspector in-charge of the Habibpur police station said that according to the preliminary investigation, police suspect that this was a case of an accident. Police said that the accident happened as the vehicle was moving at a very high speed. 

In another accident, a Gangarampur bound government bus from Kumargang in South 24-Parganas lost its control and fell into a ditch. Around 30 passengers who were travelling in the bus got injured in the accident.

The incident occurred Saturday morning at Ashram Bazar area. Police had rushed to the spot and started the rescue operation. Police also suspected that some passengers might be drowned in the ditch. Police rushed the injured passengers to a nearby hospital. Some of the passengers had received severe injuries on their body. The bus driver had fled from the spot after the accident. Police are conducting raids to nab the driver.

The local people told the police that the bus was moving at a very high speed when it lost its control and fell into the ditch. In a separate incident a speeding truck had entered into some roadside shops and damaging them completely. The incident occurred near Lataguri in Siliguri early Sunday morning. Police said that none were injured in the incident. Police have seized the vehicle and the driver has been absconding.
