OMG! Not too bad, this

While the rest of Bollywood battles out plagiarism and ‘I know where you ripped this off from’ allegations, Oh My God walks in totally unabashed. The movie rendition of a play that has been staged in Gujrati and Hindi as Kanji Virudh Kanji and Kishen VS Kanhaiya — OMG
 is a surprise package.

The plot is simple. Here’s a man who sues god and then god comes along to solve matters. But be assured, this is no regular god. There is no ray of light coming out of his palms, no halo, no ‘this is so last season’ type god-clothes in trashy silver or gold. What this god has is an ultra sexy bike and a six pack...or is it eight? We lost count while we were busy swooning. Akshay Kumar dream walks this ‘Krishna Vasudev Yadav from Gokul’ role.

But the real deal of OMG is Paresh Rawal. There’s no doubting the man’s histrionic prowess — the way he steers away every scene is brilliant. Rawal [Kanji Bhai] has played this role before for the proscenium and he handles it with smooth ease and comfort. Perfect with the comic timing,  infallible logic in his arguments [hats off to the scriptwriter for this one!] Kanji Bhai drags god to court along with all the godmen.

In a deft move, Kanji not only shakes up faith but rips off the facade of religion that fleeces people and belief, rendering it all on the money meter. Fighting his own case in court, Kanji takes on the very figures that claim to represent god in society — the clerics, the pastors and the pundits. In a constant push and pull, the game changes hands as Kanji learns and earns his own faith in all this.

Don’t be mistaken. A non-believer is not turned in to a believer overnight. His tenets of ‘faith’ remain the same, he still believes the same things, argues with the same logic — but he knows now that there is a god. But for Kanji, as for Krishna Vasudev Yadav — god lies inside.

Mithun Chakraborty is hillarious in his godman avatar and Govind Namdeo is a very ‘interesting piece’ as Kanji puts it in court. The movie has awesome one liners. Here’s our pick: Inka IQ room temperature se bhi kam hai. The soundtrack is quite good, falling right in with the mood and feel of the film. The ‘item’ number of sorts Go Go Govinda is quite a riot except Sonakshi Sinha is no ‘item’, Prabhu Deva gets our vote.  Watch OMG — you won’t regret it.
