No fees to be charged from EWS patients for issuance of blood: SBTC

In support of those belonging from the Economically Weaker Section (EWS), Delhi State Blood Transfusion Council (SBTC) has passed an order that no fees would be charged for issuance of blood and blood products to patients belonging to the EWS category.

The move comes after a 28-year-old woman belonging to the EWS category had to wait for days together to get one unit of blood. The woman was suffering from anemia, and was admitted in a private hospital. But the hospital did not have a blood bank and so, a requisition was made to get one unit of blood from Delhi government hospital.

“The Delhi government hospital asked for Rs 1,050 as a processing charge. Since she was not in position to pay the amount, the blood could not be arranged,” said Ashok Aggarwal, member of EWS monitoring committee.

He further explained that it is such an irony that an EWS patient who is being treated free of cost in a private hospital is being charged by a government hospital for blood, that too when the patient has also arranged a blood-donor.

“The government hospitals must shun this practice of charging money from EWS patients for providing blood,” said Ashok Aggarwal. Henceforth, an order has been issued by SBTC to all Regional Blood Transfusion centres to not charge any fee for the same from people belonging to EWS category.
