NIA detains suspected ISIS sympathiser from Burdwan

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Friday detained a student of a private polytechnic college at Kanksa in Burdwan suspecting him to be an ISIS sympathiser. Two of his friends from Tarakeswar in Hooghly have also been interrogated.

Sources said the youth, a resident of Dhoniakhali in Hooghly, was detained in the wee hours on Tuesday.

He has been brought to the zonal office of the investigating agency in Kolkata and was interrogated.

Mrityunjay Bhattacharya, owner of the mess where he used to stay, said on Thursday night some people came in three cars and took away the youth along with them. They had neither revealed their identity nor cited any reason behind taking the youth with them.

According to an NIA officer, the interrogation of Ahmed held thrice since Friday morning and they are trying to find that how he was linked with the ISIS.

Sources said NIA had received information a few days ago that some youth had been collecting various information and data about the installation of the Indian Air Force at Panagarh.

Subsequently, the investigation had initiated a probe and started keeping tab on the suspected people. The investigating agency questioned him by exercising the power under Section 161 of the CrPC. But the officers refused to disclose much detail and the reasons that had prompted them to detain the polytechnic student.

The investigating agency has also gone through the mails that he had sent using his Internet services. His call lists details have also been scrutinised. It is also learnt that NIA officers had kept a watch on him for the past few days before detaining him.

He had been staying in the mess for the past six months and often used to go for dinner in a restaurant which is near the mess. He used to pay Rs 900 every month to stay in the mess.

The college authority and his classmates were astonished to know that Ahmed has been detained by NIA on suspicion that he is an ISIS sympathiser. His family members and neighbours were also shocked after knowing that he has been detained. They claimed that he is a quiet and calm boy and there was nothing suspicious in his behavior.

It may be recalled that NIA had arrested a suspected ISIS sympathiser, who is a chemical engineer, from Permude in Bengaluru in January. Ahead of the Republic Day, 13 suspected sympathisers were arrested Bangalore, Mumbai, Mangalore, Hyderabad, Tumkur and Lucknow.

If he is arrested, then this will be the first case in West Bengal when a youth will get arrested as a suspected ISIS sympathiser. It may be mentioned that the incident of blast on October 2, 2014 in which Jamat-Ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh was involved had also taken place in Burdwan.
