New emergency block of Ram Manohar Lohia hospital to be functional by January 2014

If everything goes as per the plan, the RML will soon have a new emergency block within two months time and will be open to the public in January 2014. According to hospital authorities, the new block will have more number of beds, operation theatres and also more trained nurses and doctors to deal with increasing number of patients every day.

‘The new emergency block covers an area of around 70,000 square feet and is built opposite Trauma centre of RML. It will have in total, six floors and the topmost floor will have three operation theatres and most importantly 60 new beds. The main idea is to deal with emergencies and hence we planned on increasing its capacity to cater to a larger population. In addition, the block is centrally air conditioned for the convenience of our patients. And old emergency ward which was only accessible to government employees will be converted into OPD and Obstetrics and Gynecologists for open public as well,’ said Dr HK Khar, director, RML hospital
RML hospital will now have in total of 266 beds and hospital authorities will be relieved of the burden ofnot having enough bedsto take care of numerous patients.

‘The action-plan was already formulated, but we were waiting for allocation of funda and now that the budget is approved, construction work has already begun and hopefully by first week of January the new block will be inaugurated and functional for the general public. The new super specialty block was our long cherished dream but it was waiting to see the light of the day. The New Year seems perfect time for the completion of hospital’s redevelopment plan of RML and I hope it serves the purpose for which it has been initiated,’ added Dr HK Khar.

Though RML hospital has grown over the years well and at present has around 984 beds, spread over in 30 acres of land, hospital sources claim that it was facing challenges in dealing with rising number of patients and existing infrastructure appeared insufficient.

RML caters to the population of the capital city and central district, apart from patients from NCR and also outside Delhi.
