Traffic violation turns UP's SP lawmaker into fugitive

Shamli: Samajwadi Party MLA Nahid Hasan's troubles started earlier this month when he had a spat with Kairana Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Amit Pal Sharma over a traffic violation.

Hasan was allegedly driving an SUV without valid papers and misbehaved with the government servant. After a video of the incident went viral, the Uttar Pradesh police booked the MLA for misbehaving with a government official on duty.

And then began his ordeal. The police lodged 12 criminal cases against him. While four of these were new, the rest were old cases, against Hasan related to organising protests and inciting riots, which were reopened.

Hasan is facing arrest after the police secured warrants against him in four such cases. Raids and searches have been conducted at his Kairana and Delhi residences, but the lawmaker continues to evade arrest. The MLA has reportedly gone underground fearing arrest and has been declared an "absconder"

The latest case of forgery lodged against Hasan pertains to one Ummed Rao, who had leased his mini truck to Nawab, one of Hasan's aides. Nawab owed Rs 1.85 lakh to Ummed and despite several reminders by the latter, he did not return the amount or the truck.

Thereafter Ummed approached the police. Ummed's wife alleges that he suffered a heart attack after he was threatened by the MLA.

SP Shamli Ajay Kumar said, "We have four warrants against Nahid Hasan. We will attach his property by October 20, if he does not surrender or is not arrested."
