Special CBI court allows TMC MP Bandyopadhyay to go abroad for UNGA

New Delhi: After a confrontation between the Centre and the All India Trinamool Congress (AITMC) over UN General Assembly tour, a Special CBI court allowed the party Lok Sabha MP Sudip Bandyopadhyay, who is facing charges over alleged involvement in the Rose Valley group, to travel overseas in order to participate in the UN event.
Indian Parliamentarians have been participating in the UNGA since 1950, since former Prime Minister Jawahar Lal Nehru. However, this year no TMC MPs' names were enlisted by the incumbent government, where the party Parliamentarians have been in the junket since 2009.
Moreover, the Union Parliamentary Wehn confronted by Trinamool MPs, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ananth Kumar informed the matter to the Ministry for External Affairs (MEA) and sent an invitation letter to the Trinamool chief, Mamata Banerjee, sources said.
Meanwhile, Banerjee asked to ensure Bandyopadhyay's participation in the last junket of MPs. Last week, the Odisha High Court ordered the lower court to consider the TMC MP's request to release his passport. But, the courts didn't give him permission to fly abroad, sources mentioned.
Finally, a special CBI court allowed Sudip Bandyopadhyay to fly overseas following the order by the Odisha High Court on Saturday and reissued his passport for his official UNO General Assembly visit to New York. The court order allowed him to leave India for abroad from October 27 to November 1 and resubmit the passport with the court positively on November 8.
The TMC Lok Sabha MP was arrested by the CBI sleuths from Kolkata in January this year for his alleged involvement in the Rs 17,000-crore Rose Valley chit fund scam, which is being probed by the agency under the Supreme Court's directions. Bandyopadhyay is currently out on bail granted by the Odisha High Court on health grounds.
