Railways to facilitate radio cabs at New Delhi station

New Delhi: In a move that may provide fleecing relief to commuters using taxi services at New Delhi railway station to reach their destinations by using kaali-peeli taxi. The Ministry of Railways has mulled to facilitate app-based cab service providers at the station.
According to officials, the ministry is examining a proposal submitted by three major app-based cap service providers – Ola, Uber and Meru --- to provide parking facilities for their fleet at New Delhi railway station. As per the proposal, the app-based cab service providers would pay Rs 40 crore to get the facilities at the station.
"It's been a common practice that kaali-peeli taxi drivers misguide passengers by demanding exorbitant fare. In case of app-based taxi, it would be upto passengers to book the taxi of their choice. There would be no compulsion," the official said.
"Given the nexus of kaali-peeli taxi drivers, app-based taxis are not 'allowed' to park their vehicles inside the parking areas at New Delhi railway station and they pick passengers outside the parking area. Once the proposal get approved, the railways would facilitate app-based taxis with parking space, etc," the official said.
The move is part of the railways move to provide better amenities to passengers by launching a policy for app-based cab services. The Railways is aiming to get a revenue of Rs 300 crore annually.
The Railways Board has authorised Zonal Managers to frame their own policy for awarding parking contracts at railway stations. The new guidelines specifically state that for app-based taxi a dedicated area for parking upto 10 vehicles would be earmarked which would be independent of auto/taxi parking.
