India Post to roll out fully loaded e-commerce biz portal on Dec 14

New Delhi: Banking upon the strength of over 2 lakh postman deployed in every part of the country, the Department of Post is all set to enter into the e-commerce e-business market through its own portal. According to a senior official, the portal has been developed to promote products of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME) to give a push to the sector.

The website, which has been tested for a few days, would be fully operational from December 14 when Union Telecom Minister Manoj Sinha would formally launch it.

Explaining about the operational mechanism of the portal, Postmaster General (operations) AK Pandey told Millennium Post that the portal would function on the lines of other existing e-commerce websites. "We have signed MoUs with different suppliers and manufacturers for the availability of products of different range," the official said, adding that options like cash-on-delivery, payments through cards, wallets, etc would also be available for consumers.

In reply to a question as private players give a full refund on the delivery of sub-standard products, Pandey said, "The operational mechanism of our portal would not be different from others. Since the department has roped in all trusted suppliers, so there is hardly any possibility of delivery of substandard products and in case, it happens, the amount would be refunded immediately."

According to the official, at the India Post e-commerce portal, the products of Khadi, co-operative societies, farmers, etc would be available for the sale. "We are also trying to bring TRIFED and other co-operatives on board to provide a varied range of products for customers," the official said.

In response to a query as how the products would be delivered, the official said, "We have the strength of about 3 lakh postman and Grameen Dal Sevaks present in every corner of the country, which is not the case with other e-business portals as they are also dependent on us."
