External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar may visit Dhaka soon

new delhi: The newly appointed External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar is committed to achieve the goal of Indo-Bangla bilateral relations that was set by Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman during the inception of Bangladesh.

Jaishankar made the remark in a letter sent to Bangladesh Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen before leaving for Thimpu.

In the letter, he wrote, "As the foreign minister of India, I am committed to take the bilateral relations between Bangladesh and India towards the goal that was set by Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman during the independence of Bangladesh."

Relations between the two neighbouring countries have only improved ever since Bangladesh achieved its liberation, he added.

This happened as a result of wise and prudent leaderships of Sheikh Hasina and Narendra Modi in Bangladesh and India respectively, the letter added.

Jaishankar, who went to Bhutan on Friday after taking office of the foreign minister on May 30, expressed his willingness to visit Bangladesh soon, a sources said .

External affairs ministry in a statement said that India gives most importance on its neighbourhood policy.

Considered as an expert on China and the US, Jaishankar has been one of the most active diplomats in the panel of Modi government and steered the government's agenda across the world. He is the first career diplomat to handle the key portfolio of external affairs ministry.

As per tradition, he has choosen Bhutan for first trip after taking charge as External Affairs Minister.

He is on a two day visit to Thimpu. Last month Foreign Secretary Vijay K Gokhle was supposed to visit to Dhaka ,but that visit was potponed because of PM SK Hasina's foreign trip.

It is expected now External Affairs Minister will undertake the visit to keep momentum of the bilateral relations to its next height.
