CBI conducts raids in Advantage India case

New Delhi: Nearly two years after registering a case against Deepak Talwar, an accused in several backdoor aviation deals, the CBI has conducted searches at 11 locations of several private persons, suspected of involvement in the case, in and around Delhi.

The CBI had in November 2017 registered a case against Talwar's NGO Advantage India for violating several sections of the FCRA, specifically receiving about Rs 90.72 crore in foreign contribution and allegedly misappropriating the funds.

The probe agency conducted searches at Munirka, Laxmi Nagar, Krishna Nagar, Sahibabad, Turqman Gate, Dwarka, Nirman Vihar, and Pritampura in connection with the case. Interestingly, according to the CBI's FIR in the case, Talwar's NGO had received donations from aircraft manufacturer Airbus and MBDA, a missile manufacturing company based in France. Incidentally, MBDA missiles are a salient feature of the Rafale jet.

The CBI's FIR mentions that Advantage India also incurred interest of up to Rs 6.67 crore on foreign contributions.

In fact, the CBI has also alleged that Talwar's NGO had shown the purchase of medicine worth over Rs 20 crore from Astha Pharma and Hindu Pharma. However, the FCRA wing of the Home Ministry found that these pharmacies denied ever dealing with Advantage India. Talwar is currently embroiled in a money-laundering case, where the ED has alleged that he acted as a middleman to seal an aviation deal, where foreign private airlines were awarded profitable air-routes instead of the national airline.
