Besides Cong chief, 'fixing' party's internal issues tops CWC agenda

New Delhi: The Congress, which is in total disarray, is gearing up for its working committee meeting scheduled on Saturday. At the Congress Working Committee (CWC), which is basically meeting to create a consensus among its members over the name of next party president, the grand old party would formalise its strategies to deal with the party's internal issues.

As per political experts, the party's divided stand over the government's decision to scrap special status for Jammu and Kashmir makes is enough to believe that there is a lack of coordination among the party members over any critical issue.

As the decision was taken by the government to scrap Article 370 in J&K, prominent leaders came out in support of the move, while some opposed it. Even in both the Houses of the Parliament – Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha – the party opposed the bill introduced to scrap special status privilege to the Himalayan state, while its leaders like Jyotiraditya Scindia, Deepender Hooda, Bhubaneswar Kalita, etc openly supported the government stand.

The Congress 'no-clear-stand' on the J&K issue forced Kalita, its senior leader in Rajya Sabha, to resign from the House. The leaders of the party tried to defend their stand

and corner the government in Lok Sabha without presenting 'hard facts'.

In an awkward moment, leader of opposition in the Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad said that those who supported erasing the constitutional safeguard for J&K were neither familiar with the history of Kashmir nor Congress.

The shocker came from party's leader in the Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury who stood to make his point saying that nothing about Kashmir could be an internal matter.

"You say that it (Jammu and Kashmir) is an internal matter. But it is being monitored by the United Nations since 1948. Is that an internal matter? We signed the Shimla Agreement and Lahore Declaration with Pakistan. Was that an internal matter or bilateral?" Chowdhury had told the Lok Sabha during the discussion over the bill on Tuesday.

The remarks of Chowdhury left Congress Parliament Party (CPP) chairperson Sonia Gandhi, who was sitting next to him, in a shock.
