Air Customs appraiser, two others convicted by CBI court

Chennai: A Special Court trying CBI cases on Tuesday convicted the appraiser of Air customs department and two others in connection with the disproportionate assets case.
Delivering the verdict, XII Special Judge for CBI cases A Murugan convicted appraiser D Ramani and sentenced him to two years rigorous imprisonment, while awarding one year jail term to his wife R Vijayalakshmi and the other accused Adikesavulu.
The Judge also imposed a total fine of Rs two lakh on them.
The Court has also ordered to confiscate Rs 1,55,18,048, which was in the possession of accused persons acquired illegally.
The Anti-Corruption Branch of CBI, Chennai, investigated and filed chargesheet against Ramani and two others under Sections 109 of IPC and under Sec 13(2) r/w 13(1)(e) of Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, alleging that Ramani acquired assets in his name and in the name of his family members during the period from
January one, 2002 to January six, 2010 to the tune of Rs 1,64,68,103 which was disproportionate to his known sources of income. After completion of trial, the Judge delivered the verdict convicting the accused.
