Nandigram Day to be observed today

Trinamool Congress will observe Nandigram day on Monday in every block. The Chief Minister who will be touring in North Bengal will take part in a meeting.

The Left Front government had opened fire killing 14 people in Nandigram and leaving 17 others injured who had refused to give land to the erstwhile State government. The State government had previously issued notice to acquire land in Nandigram.

Mamata Banerjee who was the then the Opposition leader took up the issue and started a movement in support of the people.

The issue became an important issue in 2011 Assembly election and finally put an end to 34 years of rule of the Left Front.

After coming to power every March 14 is observed as Nandigram day and through various programmes the people who had sacrificed their lives are remembered.

The State government had planned to acquire land in Nandigram to make an access to Nayachar where a chemical hub was to come up by Prasoon Mukherjee, a pet businessman of Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee.

The Centre later declined to give clearance to set up the chemical hub.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had visited the area along with several industrialists and in December last year decided to develop Nayachar as an eco tourism centre.

To carry out development in Nandigram, Subhendu Adhikari, the party’s MP will contest in the Assembly election this year.

Trinamool Congress will go all out to attack the CPI(M) to demolish the allegation that law and order situation has deteriorated in the state in the past four and a half years.

Mamata Banerjee said that people had not forgotten the State sponsored terrorism by the CPI(M) in the past 34 years.

Land was forcibly taken and those who had opposed the party were either killed or forced to leave the area. Peace has returned to the area and any attempt to disturb it will be resisted.
