Municipal Corporation to upgrade several roads with mastic asphalt

The Kolkata Municipal Coporation (KMC) has taken up an elaborate programme to upgrade several roads in the city with mastic asphalt.

Apart from road upgradation, the KMC will also work for the beautification of the surrounding, Mayor Sovan Chatterjee said on Wednesday.

The upgradation work will be carried out at Bakulbagan Road, Monoharpukur Road upto Rashbehari Avenue,  Farooqui Road in Kidderpore, Prince Anwar Shah Road along with many others.

Chatterjee said the roads required maintenance only if they were damaged due to waterlogging.

It may be recalled that the underground sewer line in vast areas in the city have been already upgraded and that has also minimised the waterlogging.

Even if there was waterlogging, the accumulated water receded fast as the water carrying capacity of the underground pipeline has gone up after the upgradation.

The waterlogging on Amherst Street, Thanthania in north Kolkata, vast areas surrounding Moulali and Kalighat and Bhowanipore   is a matter of the past.

The duration of waterlogging in vast areas surrounding Rabindra Sadan and Akashbani has also been reduced.

Several state government agencies have provided fund. Once the roads become smooth, the speed of vehicles will go up and there will be less number of accidents, he said.
