Mulayam, Akhilesh meet VHP leaders

In a politically significant move, senior most VHP functionary Ashok Singhal met Samajwadi Party president Mulayam Singh Yadav and Uttar Pradesh chief minister Akhilesh Yadav. The meeting with them lasted 90 minutes, sparking a debate on whether it was a move to find a solution to vex Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid issue through dialogue.

The meeting took place at Kalidas Marg residence of the UP CM. Singhal accompanied by Vishwa Hindu Parishad general secretary Chamapt Rai, former MP and member of Ramjanm Bhumi Nyas Ram Vilas Vedanti and former union minister and senior VHP leader Swami Chinmayanand and other saints, reached there in the forenoon.

The meeting seemed to be unplanned as chief minister was forced to postpone his other official meetings to be with VHP leaders. No official word was available about the meeting but speculations are that VHP wants Mulayam Singh to intervene in Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Mosque issue and act as interlocutor.

Muslim clerics are not happy the way Mulayam gave an audience to VHP leader. ‘Mulayam is no one to talk about Babri Mosque. He does not represent Muslims. It is our issue and our qaum will decide about it,’ Shia leader Kalbe Jawad said.

Convener of Babri Masjid Action Committee Jaffaryab Jilani said that the issue is sub-judice. Dialogue won’t help now. Muslims will abide by only court’s order, he said.

The VHP on the other hand said their leaders had asked the CM to provide adequate security for ‘84 kosi’ parikrama in Ayodhya starting on 25 August.
