Modi, Mufti meet to seal J&K deal

It is learnt that the government formation can happen anytime after the final meeting of Prime Minister Narendra Modi with People’s Democratic Party (PDP) chief Mufti Mohammed Sayeed on February 23. Earlier, on January 20, Millennium Post had reported it was only BJP-PDP alliance, which would form the government in the valley.

Speaking to the media, senior BJP leader Ram Madhav said, “We have arrived at the CMP for governance. Both of us have to  compromise a little while keeping common ground intact.” For the last few weeks  PDP-BJP were engaged in serious consultations to bridge differences and finally drafted a CMP. There are indications that PDP has softened its stand on AFSPA while BJP has reportedly agreed to maintain status quo on Article 370.

Mufti had earlier sought a time-bound phased withdrawal of AFSPA, which could be reinstated if required. In the CMP there is no direct reference to Article 370. PDP, which swept the Muslim-majority Kashmir Valley in the Assembly polls, has steadfastly opposed any attempt to dilute Article 370 which makes the consent of the state government necessary for all laws except those related to defence or national security.

Speaking to Millennium Post over telephone, senior state BJP leader and probable Deputy Chief Minister of the valley, Nirmal Singh, said: “With the present situation, we are expecting to form the government in J&K soon.”
