An agitated mob ransacked and damaged an illegal hooch den at Ramgopalpur area under Galsi police station in Burdwan.

It may be mentioned that eight persons were so far killed while thirty others were hospitalised after they consumed spurious hooch.

Following the incident, resentment was growing up among the local residents.

On Thursday morning, the local people – armed with bamboo sticks – stormed into the hooch den and
ransacked it.

Many of the local people alleged that some of the hooch dealers continued to sell the spurious liquor even after the tragedy.

They also alleged that police have arrested the two persons in this connection but are yet to dismantle the hooch shop, which is situated in the locality.

Senior administrative officials met the deceased family members on Thursday and talked with them.

Meanwhile, five people have died in Nodakhali in South 24 Parganas district in last three days allegedly after consuming illicit liquor, officials said.

Local Trinamool MLA Ashok Deb and Zilla Parishad health officer Dr Tarun Roy said while one person
died on Thursday, four other deaths have been reported since January 2.

The deaths were reported from Kasipur and Alampur localities of Nodakhali area, they said.

According to a police officer, three persons were reported ill after consuming the hooch at the joint of
Muzibar Rehman Seikh on January 2.

Seikh is absconding, the officer added.
