Minor girl held for spraying acid at grandmother

A 14-year-old girl was apprehended on charges of throwing acid at her grandmother after the latter had restricted her from speaking over the mobile phone.

The incident took place on Thursday at Suryanagar area in Alipurduar. The girl was arrested on Friday and sent to a juvenile home. The 70-year-old woman Arati Nandi was admitted to Alipurduar Hospital. Both of her eyes were damaged due to the acid attack.

Police said that the woman had often asked the girl not to speak over phone much as it was not considered to be good for health. The girl, however, didn’t pay heed to the woman’s advice.

On Thursday, the girl went to a ground adjacent to the local club in the evening and was again found speaking over phone behind a tree.

The woman took the phone and threw it away as the girl refused to stop speaking over phone. The girl didn’t say anything to the woman and didn’t pick up her mobile phone. Instead she left the place and returned within five minutes with a cup containing acid. She threw the acid on the woman’s face.

The girl threw the cup in a bush and started crying for help. When local people gathered at the spot, the girl claimed that two youth came on a motorbike and threw acid on her grandmother.

The local people admitted the woman to the hospital. Police reached the spot and spoke to the girl considering her to be an eyewitness of the incident. She tried to befool the police in similar manner.

The police had initiated their probe considering the girl’s claim to be true. But investigating officers found the truth when they took statement of the victim after she regained her senses early on Friday morning.

The victim claimed that the girl threw acid on her face as she had tried to stop her from speaking over mobile phone. The girl was subsequently held and sent to juvenile home.
