MEA to ‘export’ teachers to Bhutan

It has been learnt that the government as a ‘model initiative’ is planning to send two teachers for Economics and one each for English, Computer Science, Media Studies, Sociology and Mathematics to Sherubtse College in Bhutan.

‘There are also plans to send two professors to teach Civil Engineering, three to teach Banking and Finance at Jigme Namgyel Polytechnic College. We will send three, two and one professor each to teach Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Information Technology respectively at College of Science and Technology,’ informed sources said.

‘The selection will be done on the basis of willingness and regularly teaching at UGC recognised central or state universities with minimum five years of experience as lecturer. Those who are involved in the service as a part time will not be allowed under the scheme,’ he said, while adding that deputation period will be initially for two years, which could be renewed up to three years depending on performance.

Those who will be ‘exported’ will have to provide their expertise in development, evaluation and strengthening of existing curriculum apart from regular teaching. ‘They will also be asked to improve the process of teaching and learning in college and initiate activities and programmes in the college to enrich the academic life of the college,’ he said.

On Friday, Modi had stressed the importance of teachers and called for making India a hub for exporting teachers. ‘Gradually this inspiring chapter (Teachers’ Day) is losing its importance. This has become limited to giving awards to teacher and having ceremonies. Need of the hour is to underline the importance of a teacher in our social life. India is a country of young people and we should think of becoming a hub for exporting teachers. There is a need for debate on the reasons why many bright students do not want to become teachers.’

‘In this fast changing global scenario it is believed that there is a great demand for teachers. India is a young nation. Can’t India dream of exporting teachers of high caliber?’ Modi asked. Sources said the idea of exporting teachers came to his (Modi) mind during his first foreign visit to Bhutan in June, where he had promised Bhutan’s King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuk and prime minister Tshering Tobgay that he will assist to improve the educational standard of the country by sending teachers to  Bhutan. Since, then the MEA was working on the modalities and finally the ministry has decided to go ahead with the plan a day ahead of the ‘Teacher’s Day’.
