Mayor promises dairy colony in east Delhi

The Mayor of East Delhi Municipal Corporation has assured a delegation of dairy farm owners that a dairy colony would be established in East Delhi, providing them enough space. She gave this assurance after receiving memorandum from a delegation of agitating dairy owners on Monday.

'Their demand is genuine and we will identify appropriate space, which is suitable for their profession. After trifurcation of the pre-existing MCD, the need for separate dairy colonies in East Delhi Municipal Corporation in imminent,' said Dr Annapurna Mishra, Mayor, East Delhi Municipal Corporation.

On Monday a group of thousands of dairy owners from Ghaduali, Ghazipur and other areas gathered at corporation's office in Patpargunj and submitted a memorandum to Mayor.

The protest was organised under the banner of Pathik Sena. 'We have demanded the Mayor to provide separate and spacious dairy colony in East Delhi. As the dairy colony being built by Delhi government at Bhoga is around 50 km from here and is not spacious enough to accommodate us,' said Mukhia Gurjar, president of Pathik Sena.

The government has provided 1,500 plots at Bhoga in Outer Delhi for dairy farm owners, but they say the plots are too small. 'I have around 60 buffalos which can't be kept in the plot provided there. Further, there is no facility for animals,' added Gurjar.

There are over 35,000 small dairies in Delhi, which are concentrated in around 10 dairy colonies established in mid-70s. In East Delh Ghajipur and Ghadauli are the main dairy-dominated areas.
