Man throws acid on woman for spurning advances

A 40-year-old woman and her son were injured in an acid attack by a miscreant after the woman had turned down his indecent proposal. The incident had occurred at Tarakeswar in Hooghly and triggered tension in the area. The accused, Nur Islam, was arrested the same day by the police following 

the incident.

Police said that the accused had proposed to the 40-year-old widow and tried to convince her into an 

illicit affair, but the woman turned down his proposal which infuriated the accused so much that he decided to teach her a lesson.

Local people said that as the woman was living with her son alone in the house, following the demise of her husband, Nur Islam tried to take advantage of the situation. The accused had repeatedly attempted to have an illicit relationship with the woman, but she spurned his advances whenever he tried to do so.

As a result of the constant rejections, the accused decided to take revenge on the woman. On late Sunday night, the accused knocked on the door of the victim’s residence. After she opened the door, 

he hurled acid on her face, and also on her son when he tried to rescue her.

Local residents took mother-son duo to a primary health centre in Tarakeswar. They were later shifted to Calcutta Medical College and Hospital.The doctors in the hospital said that the woman’s  

face was completely burnt, while her son had also suffered from an acid injury on his face and on some portion of his body.

The accused fled the spot after the incident. However, on the basis of a complaint, police later located the accused and arrested him.

A local villager told the police that the accused lives in the same area and had been making indecent proposals to the widow despite her repeated rejections. After he failed in his purpose he started hatching plans to exact revenge on her.

Even some of the locals, who had an inkling of his plans, did not dare to protest against the accused, as he was associated with some local anti-socials elements.
