Man stabbed to death by son over property dispute

A 58-year-old man was stabbed to death by his son following a property related dispute in their house at Ambikanagar in Siliguri on Thursday morning. Police said that the victim Baidyamalya Das was sitting on the courtyard in front of his house on Thursday morning when his son had attacked him with a sickle.

Before anyone could understand anything, the victim’s son Shyamalmalya killed his father by repeatedly stabbing him. Local people and other members of the family came out to find the victim lying in a pool of blood. They tried to take Baidyamalya to hospital but he died on the spot. A doctor from the locality went to the spot and declared him dead. Local people, however, caught his son who was later handed over to the police.

Police went to the spot and sent the body for an autopsy. Preliminary investigation revealed that the accused, who is also mentally unstable, had an altercation with the victim on Wednesday night.
Police questioned some of the members of the victim’s family about what had led to the problem on Wednesday night. A police officer said that it was not possible to speak to the victim’s wife as she was in a traumatised state. Though the police are yet to ascertain the exact reason behind the murder, but after speaking to some members they suspect that property related dispute had led to the murder.

Police also came to know that the accused had been undergoing treatment for his ailment and the financial condition of the family was not that stable as it was earlier.

It may be mentioned that this is the fourth incident of murder in Siliguri in the past one week. A few days ago an under-trail prisoner was killed by another inmate when they were under treatment in North Bengal Medical College and Hospital and a businessman was also killed on May 4 by another businessman following a dispute.
