Man kills 2 sons, commits suicide at MDI campus flat

An assistant librarian of Management Development Institute, (MDI) in Gurgaon, allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself after poisoning both his minor sons, at his residence on the campus on Monday evening.

The mother of the deceased Bharat Kumar Dabas, 40, in her complaint to the Gurgaon police has accused his wife Sheetal (37) along with his mother-in-law Rajballa and father-in-law Rajprakash Suhag of murder and abetment to suicide.

After initial investigation, the police revealed that the duo was involved in constant fights over a period of time, that affected him very badly. The deceased’s wife, Sheetal, had left the house few days back to live with her mother. According to the complaint, Bharat was also upset with his sister-in-law Pallavi who was supposedly threatening Bharat.

During the investigation, police found a suicide note from the spot that held his in-laws responsible behind this extreme step. Bharat wrote that he was constantly tortured by his sister-in-law who threatened him without any reason. There were also frequent fights between him and his wife which started in December last year when Pallavi (his wife’s sister) used to call him up to say that if he ever said no for anything to his wife, he would be put behind bars. The letter also said that he was also told that his two sons would be taken away from him.

A similar letter was written by him to the acting Director of MDI which was delivered to him by a clerk working at MDI.  It also had the same contents where Bharat explained what he had gone through all this while because of his wife and his in-laws. Posted as assistant librarian in MDI business school, Bharat was living with his wife, Sheetal, at Sansriti residential complex on MDI campus in Sector 18, Gurgaon. His wife is known to be teaching at a government polytechnic college in Jhajjar adjoining Gurgaon.

Sources within MDI told Millennium Post that Sheetal was trying to call Bharat on Saturday and Sunday but he did not receive her call. On Monday morning, she informed the MDI office about Bharat not responding to her calls. The MDI officials then informed Sector 18 police when they found his quarter locked from inside. On reaching the spot, cops found him hanging from a fan inside a locked room while his sons, Abhinav (8) and Arjun (5), were lying dead allegedly after Bharat poisoned them. The two sons studied at American Public School in DLF Phase 2.

On Monday morning, police said, the family informed the school bus driver that their kids would not be going to school. While Sheetal left for work, Bharat remained indoors with the kids. At 2 pm, Sheetal informed one of the servants that his husband was not picking up the phone. The administration was alerted and after several failed attempts, at 4:30 pm, one of Bharat’s relatives climbed up the windows of the room from the back side only to find the two sons dead and Bharat hanging from the fan. Police was called in and bodies taken for post-mortem.

A case has been lodged at Sector 18 police station under Section 302 of the IPC (punishment for murder) and Section 306 (Abetment to suicide) against Bharat’s wife Sheetal, her father and other family members based on the complaint submitted by Bharat’s mother.

“Bharat died due to hanging. His sons had no injury marks and had apparently died due to smothering or consuming poison,” said ACP Hawa Singh. “We are investigating the case. Bharat’s family also alleged that he was also upset due to some reason with his in-laws and sister-in-law. All the family members of his wife, including the wife are absconding. As soon as we know about their whereabouts, they’ll be arrested,” Singh added.
