Man hurt after being shot at near school in Entally

Two motorbike-borne miscreants opened fire at a person near a school at Entally this morning. The person received injuries on his right leg and has been admitted to hospital.

Police suspect that the incident is a fall out of a gang war between two rival groups of the same area. The incident led to panic in the area as it took place when people were coming to drop their children in the school.

Police said around 9 am the victim Kalu, went to drop his daughter to school. Two persons on a motorbike were following him and they approached when Kalu stopped his two-wheeler near the school and opened fire at him. He received injuries on his right leg and fell on the road.

The school goers and their parents started running for a safe place. Later, police came to the spot and took Kalu to hospital where he was under treatment.

It may be mentioned that policemen and officers of the state fire and emergency services department were present in a jute mill situated a stone throw distance from the spot. The policemen were on-duty as a youth got stuck when a wall of the mill collapsed on Sunday night. Local people raised questions on the policing as the miscreants opened fire despite the presence of some policemen in the same area.

Investigation revealed that the miscreants on the motorbike were Bablu and Ilu. Bablu is the chief of a rival gang which is against Bapi, leader of another gang. 

Kalu, who was shot at outside the school on Monday, was a member of Bapi’s gang.

There had been a fight between the two groups a few days ago and on Monday Bablu attacked Kalu to take revenge. Police came to know after speaking to those who witnessed the incident.

Local people had noted the phone number of the motorbike and it was later recovered from a hideout of Bablu. The police are yet to arrest the accused.

Shalini Ghosh, a local resident, said such incidents leave an effect on kids. The police should make necessary arrangements to ensure security of people at least near schools and other educational institutions.

It may be mentioned that around 10 days ago a businessman Babulal Shaw was stabbed to death in front of Calcutta Girls School at Bowbazar.
