Man held for smuggling gold worth Rs 40 lakh

A man was arrested for allegedly trying to smuggle into the country gold bars valued at about Rs 40 lakh by hiding it in his lower abdomen at the international airport here.
Kalander Abbas Jahir, a resident of Tamil Nadu, had arrived here from Dubai on Wednesday. He was intercepted by customs officials and his baggages were searched following an intelligence input.

‘During x-ray of his body at Safdarjung Hospital, some foreign elements was noticed in his lower abdomen. After ejection, these objects were found to be 15 rectangular gold biscuits collectively weighing 1.5 kgs,’ a press release issued today by the customs said.

The value of the seized gold is Rs 36.39 lakh. The passenger was arrested and further investigation was continuing, it said.
The customs officials had on June 20 also arrested a Sri Lankan national for allegedly trying to smuggle into the country gold bars valuing about Rs 57 lakh.

Four persons were also arrested in two separate incidents of smuggling on June 19 at Indira Gandhi International Airport. They had tried to smuggle gold worth over Rs 78 lakh.
