Mamata orders arrest of councillor in land row

A Trinamool Congress supporter was killed by assailants allegedly led by a party municipal councillor over a land dispute on the eastern fringes of Kolkata on Wednesday. West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee said she has ordered the arrest of the councillor, Shambunath Kow.

Addressing a rally at Jhilimili in Bankura district, Banerjee said, ‘An incident has taken place at Dhapa. I don’t know at whose behest the councillor has done it. I have ordered that he be arrested. He may be a Trinamool man, but the law is equal for everybody. He will also be suspended from the party’.

The victim has been identified as Adhir Maity. His daughter said that her father went to the spot following fervent requests after some people forcibly tried to ‘take possession’ of a piece of land in Dhapa area. ‘My father lost his life as he protested. He was thrashed mercilessly’, she said.
