Mamata, Left to protest against petrol hike

Saturday evening will see West Bengal Chief Minister and UPA partner Mamata Banerjee take to the streets again, protesting against the steep hike in fuel prices announced by the UPA Government on Wednesday. A rally will take off from Jadavpur, walk through Anwar Shah Road and finally wind up at Hazra crossing-near Banerjee's house on Harish Chatterjee Street.

'We are aggreived, angry and sad at this decision', said Mamata on the Wednesday evening, promising to agitate against a decision which is bound to hurt the masses. She made it clear that she would not destabilise the Government at the Centre but will exercise the right to protest.

Banerjee also expressed surprise that the Government made the price hike announcement just after the Parliament session got over. 'I am really worried about the way the UPA Government is treating its allies', she said on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the Left Front demanded a complete rollback on the price hike on Friday and announced a six day protest programme in West Bengal. 'There has been no hike in international crude prices in the last two years but the petrol price has shot up by Rs 25. We demand a complete rollback', Biman Bose, Left Front Chairman, told reporters here. Protest meetings will be held across the state from 26 to 30 May and wrap up on 31 May, he announced.

He also faulted the UPA government for the decline of the rupee and the state government for not reducing sales tax on petrol.
