Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee inaugurated Bangla Sangeet Mela at Nazrul Mancha here on Monday.
While inaugurating the event, Banerjee said the singers and musicians of the past did not get their due respect. She said the state government had enlisted around 50, 000 artistes who were getting monthly honorarium of Rs 1,000.
“I know this amount is nothing but we have recognised them and showed our respect in humble way,” she said. The Chief Minister recalled her love for music and said “music is for me like breathing fresh air. Whenever I go I listen to music and my journeys are incomplete without music. Music is my inspiration and I respect the great musicians who had enriched Bengali music. There were great composers and singers who had enriched our culture.”
Famous composer and singer Bappi Lahiri was given a special felicitation. Lahiri, who had contested from Srirampur in BJP ticket in 2014 Lok Sabha polls said he felt very happy for the felicitation. “I have profound respect for Mamata di and really feel proud and honoured to be here and share the dias with her.” Later he sang a song ‘bolo tar ki aporadh jonmo hoeche jar panke’.
Many folk singers and kirtaniyas were also felicitated. Ajoy Chakraborty, Subhomita, Nachiketa, Kumar Bose and Golam Fakir were present at the function. The week-long event will be held at Rabindra Sadan, Girish Mancha, Deshpriya Park, Sisir Mancha among others.
