Malaysia Hindus protest against Muslim preacher

At least 100 ethnic Hindus on Wednesday gathered here demanding action against an Islamic preacher for allegedly insulting their religion by telling Muslims not to buy curry powder products from what he deemed as?’Hindu’ companies.

The protest was organised by Malaysia’s largest ethnic Indian political party, the Malaysian Indian Congress (MIC) and several other NGOs.

The crowd, which gathered in the Little India suburb of Brickfields was protesting against a speech by Ustaz Shahul Hamid early this year, reportedly telling Muslims not to buy curry powder made by Hindu companies, online portal MalaysiaKini said.

Muslim majority Malaysia’s 26 million people includes eight per cent ethnic Indians who are mostly Hindus.

MIC vice-president M Saravanan demanded clarification on whether Shahul Hamid was a member of opposition Islamic fundamentalist PAS party.

‘If it’s true, PAS must take action against him,’ Saravanan said. Malaysiakini said a video clip of Hamid’s speech has gone viral, in which he is heard telling Muslims not to buy curry powder products from what he deemed as?’Hindu’ companies, such as Alagappa’s and Baba’s.
