Madan denied bail, Mamata flags off X’mas fest

In what seemed like a rough day, the West Bengal Transport Minister Madan Mitra -- arrested in connection with the multi-crore rupee Saradha scam --- was denied bail on Tuesday for the second time with a city court extending his CBI custody till Dec 19.’

The CBI apparently produced some more evidences in the court, even as Mitra complained to the judge of alleged “pressure tactics” used by the CBI while grilling him. The CBI arrested Mitra on Friday in connection with the chit fund scam. Furious at the arrest of her minister by the CBI, the West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee on Saturday said “if an image is a proof of criminal conspiracy, arrest PM for Sahara scam.”

Holding a protest rally at Kolkata’s Maidan a day after the arrest of Mitra, Mamata said: “It is time to hit the streets. I ask the sportspersons to hit the streets. Our support is with you.”Banerjee herself joined the rally which was to be attended by sportspersons in support of Mitra. Meanwhile, CBI sleuths ostensibly  questioned Mitra  in the presence of two senior Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) officials and confronted him with recorded statements of his driver, former confidential assistant Bapi Karim and the evidences it collected over the last three months.
