Legendary jester Gopal Bhar to be poll mascot in Nadia

Legendary 18th century court jester Gopal Bhar will serve as a poll mascot in Nadia, officials today said.

Bhar, known for his ready wit and wisdom, adorned the court of King Krishna Chandra who ruled Nadia and surrounding areas between 1710 and 1783. 

“The mascot of Nadia election is Gopal Bhar and it will carry the message of the Election Commission for the conduct of free and fair election,” Nadia District Magistrate Vijay Bharti said. The jester’s still very popular all over Bengal and beyond for his wit and humour, had an uncanny ability to find solutions to tricky situations. The TMC candidates from Nadia are Mahua Moitra (Karimpur), Gouri Shankar Dutta (Tehatta), Tapas Saha (Palashipara), Naseeruddin Ahamed (Kaliganj), Kallol Khan (Nakashipara), Rukbanur Rahaman (Chapra), Abani Mohan Joardar (Krishnanagar Uttar), Pundarikakshya Saha (Nabadwip), Ujjal Biswas (Krishnanagar Dakshin), Ajoy Dey (Santipur), Partha Sarathi Chatterjee (Ranaghat Uttar Paschim), Satyajit Biswas (Krishnaganj (SC)), Samir Poddar (Ranaghat Uttar Purba (SC)), Abir Ranjan Biswas (Ranaghat Dakshin (SC)), Ratna Ghosh (Chakdaha), Dr Ramendranath Biswas (Kalyani (SC)), Nilima Nag (Haringhata (SC). Nadia goes to poll on April 21.
