Youth dies after jumping from running train to catch mobile snatcher

Kolkata: A youth from Jamshedpur died after he fell down from a running train while trying to catch a mobile snatcher on Saturday night. The deceased was identified as Sourav Ghosh.

According to sources, Ghosh, a resident of Jamshedpur, used to work at a private hospital in Kolkata. He used to stay at Howrah for work and returned home every Saturday.

On Saturday night he boarded the Howrah-Sambalpur Express and was talking to someone on his mobile phone while standing near the gate. At around 9:30 pm, the train slowed down as it approached Uluberia station and suddenly an unknown youth snatched his phone and jumped out of the train as it was passing through the platform.

Startled by the incident, Ghosh soon jumped out of the train in order to chase the snatcher. However, by that time the train had passed the platform and he fell on the railway track and suffered a serious head injury.

Meanwhile, some passengers of the train witnessed the incident and informed the railway authorities. After a few minutes, Government Railway Police (GRP), Uluberia was informed who soon reached the spot and rushed Ghosh to Uluberia Sub-Divisional Hospital. However, he succumbed to his injuries a few moments later.

Police found his address and contact numbers of his family members from his bag and informed them about the situation.

GRP personnel were supposed to be in the train and keep surveillance but they were not seen since the train left Howrah station. Ghosh's family members alleged that it is a case of security lapse. South Eastern Railway authorities informed that they are talking to the police officials to increase security in trains.
