WB CM slams Union govt's Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao scheme

Krishnanagar: West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee today slammed the Union government's Beti Bachao Beti Padhao's Rs 100 crore provision saying it was a very poor funding for a nation-wide scheme, compared to her Trinamool Congress government's Rs 50,000 crore Kanyashree prakalpa and newly launched Rupashree's Rs 1200 crore scheme, both for young women in the state.
"What could be achieved by a Rs 100 crore scheme of "Beti Bachao Beti Padhao" for a big country like India and if the fund are distributed equally then a state's share was Rs 3 crore each, " Banerjee, while slamming the poor funding of the union government, said.
Banerjee said the Kanyashree prakalpa, meant for assistance to poor girls for education up to graduate level, which earned world wide name and got top award from the United Nations.
Under the new scheme, if a family has an income up to Rs 1.5 lakh in a year, the government would provide Rs 25,000 for wedding if assistance is sought for. Rs 1200 crore has been set aside in the latest budget for 2018-19. Banerjee also said some 6 lakh girls to be benefitted this financial year.
