Urban Development dept appoints administrator for Naihati

Kolkata: The state Municipal Affairs and Urban Development department appointed an administrator in Naihati municipality, where 29 out of 31 councillors have joined BJP.

State Urban Development and Municipal Affairs minister Firhad Hakim said the administrator has been appointed to look after the municipality. It may be mentioned that an administrator has been appointed in Howrah Municipal Corporation as well.

After BJP won 18 Lok sabha seats in Bengal, 29 councillors of the municipality went to the BJP office in New Delhi and joined the party.

The administrative work of the municipality was badly hit as the employees did not know what to do. Local BJP leaders put the municipality under lock and key, causing great inconvenience to the residents.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had held a meeting outside the municipality to protest against the attack on Trinamool Congress workers by BJP. To restore the working environment in the municipality, the administrator was appointed on Friday.

It may be mentioned that the councillors of Bhatpara, Halisahar and Kanchrapara municipalities have also gone to BJP, following the footsteps of the Naihati councillors.

Senior officials of the Urban Development department said no decision regarding the three other municipalities has been taken yet.
