Two persons killed, 12 injured in fatal accident

Kolkata: Two persons including a woman were killed and 12 others injured, some of them critically, in a fatal road accident that took place near Bhakuri area of Murshidabad on National Highway 34.
Police said that the accident occurred when a trekker which was carrying the passengers from Bhakuri collided with a dumper coming from the opposite side.
A woman passenger whose identity is yet to ascertained died on the spot while the other injured passengers were rushed to the Murshidabad Medical College and Hospital where one of them was declared brought dead.
According to the police there were around 18 passengers who were travelling in the trekker when the accident happened. The incident triggered traffic snarls in the area.
The local residents heard a huge noise and rushed to the spot. They rescued the injured persons from the trekker which was badly damaged in the accident. The local people alleged that the dumper was at a high speed as a result of which the driver could not control the vehicle when the trekker suddenly came in front of it.
The driver of the dumper fled the spot immediately after the accident. After being informed police reached the spot and started an investigation. The police are yet to ascertain the actual cause of the accident. As per the preliminary investigation it is suspected that over-speeding of vehicles might have led to the accident.
The circumstantial evidences also show that one of the vehicles was at high speed at the time of the collision. Police have seized both the vehicles.
Police brought the situation under control and the traffic movement resumed on NH 34. Police have started a probe in this regard.
