Suvendu's security guard attempts suicide

Kolkata: The security guard of state Transport and Environment minister Suvendu Adhikari tried to commit suicide, by shooting himself with his service revolver on Saturday morning.

Subhabrata Chakraborty, who is the minister's pilot car security guard, lived along with other policemen at the police barrack at Contai in East Midnapore.

According to police sources, the sound of a gunshot was heard from Chakraborty's room at around 9.30 am. The other policemen in the barrack found him lying in a pool of blood and rushed him to Kanthi Mahakuma Hospital. The service revolver was recovered right beside him. Senior police officials of the district and the inspector in charge of Contai police station, reached the spot immediately after receiving the news.

Chakraborty, a police personnel from SAF, was supposed to return to his home at Sarberia in Mahisadal on Saturday evening, after performing his duties. He was packing his bags when suddenly he received a phone call. The incident occurred a few minutes after he attended the call, a police source informed.

"Our preliminary probe has revealed that he was suffering from mental depression. We are examining the call records of his cell phone for further leads," a senior district police official said.

Chakraborty has been tasked with the security of the minister for nearly five years. The 40-year-old had also worked in Jangalmahal.

According to sources in the hospital, he had sustained bullet injury in his head and had an operation in the afternoon. He has slipped into a coma and his condition is still critical.

He had returned late from his duty on Friday night and spoke with his wife over phone. "We noticed no abnormality in his behavior at that time. His wife works in a primary school and he has two daughters. We are still in the dark about what suddenly triggered such an act," said a police personnel.
