Sundarban cops approach school kids to check human trafficking cases

After taking the help of schoolchildren to check spreading of rumours and bringing down the total number of road accidents in the state, the police in Sunderbans initiated a campaign among school-goers to check human trafficking.
Considering that a message can be made acceptable to people if it is spread mainly through children, the police had been campaigning on different issues in schools, colleges and other educational institutions.
Now, in a bid to check human trafficking, too, the police held seminars in different schools under the jurisdiction of Sunderban Police district.
The Mamata Banerjee government has taken up a series of initiatives to help girl students continue with their studies up to graduation and post graduation levels. With the implementation of projects mainly Kanyashree, the dropout rates in schools have come down. At the same time, there was also a drop in the rate of child marriages. The Sabujshree project has also helped in bringing down the rate of child marriages.
The policemen from different police stations in Sunderbans went to the schools in their respective areas and created awareness among students.
The policemen asked the students to inform them immediately if they suspect anyone to be human trafficker.
They have also been asked to spread the message among as many people as possible. The policemen urged the students to create awareness on this among their family members, relatives, neighbours and friends. The step has been taken considering that creating awareness is one of the methods to check such incidents, besides taking all other necessary steps. It is the local people who get to know first when someone approaches family members of a girl to marry her or to assure a good job in some other part of the country or abroad. So, the local people have to react first and have to inform the police to avoid human trafficking, a police officer said.
Besides creating awareness to check human trafficking, the police have also made the students aware that how rumours can be easily spread through social media and how to check the same.
