STF seizes 18K bottles of Phensedyl Syrup, 2 held

Kolkata: The Special Task Force (STF) of Kolkata Police has seized 18,000 bottles of Phensedyl Syrup and arrested two persons on Sunday night.

They were intercepted on Strand Road while the consignment which was loaded on a Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV) was about to be delivered. According to the STF officials, the sleuths got a tip-off about a huge consignment of Phensedyl Syrup that would come to Kolkata with the intention of being smuggled into Bangladesh.

Working on the information, the sleuths came to know that an HGV would carry the consignment coming from Uttar Pradesh. On Sunday night, the STF personnel were keeping a close watch in and around Strand Road to identify the suspicious HGV.

Around 11:10 pm, some STF personnel identified an HGV bearing a registration number outside Bengal. The sleuths immediately started chasing it. The HGV was finally intercepted near Gwalior Ghat on Strand Road.

During a preliminary search operation, the sleuths found bottles of Phensedyl Syrup in the HGV. Two persons identified as Md Alam and Md Monu of Kaushambi in Uttar Pradesh along with the HGV were taken to the STF facility.

Later, the STF personnel thoroughly searched the HGV and found 18 thousand bottles of the same. The duo was arrested on charges of contravention in relation to manufactured drugs and preparations (21C) and abetment and criminal conspiracy of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

Sources informed that the Phensedyl bottles were going to be smuggled into Bangladesh using one of the India-Bangladesh borders in Bengal.
