State takes steps to retain think tanks; animation academy students hired before course completion

Kolkata: The state government is concrete take steps to develop infrastructure so that employment opportunities can be created in the Information Technology (IT) sector which will support job creation for the youth.

On Wednesday, during a programme organised by Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC) Debashis Sen, Additional Chief Secretary, Department of IT and Electronics, stated the government's aim is to create more jobs in the Information Technology sector so that residents of Bengal don't have to move to other states.

According to him, Bengal has been the think tank and intellectual capital of India for a long time.

However, for various reasons, much of this talent at present is residing outside of the state for jobs. Keeping this fact in mind, the state government is now trying its best to develop infrastructure to keep the talented youths within the state.

The state government is now trying to create an ecosystem, a cluster-based development approach, to establish the Bengal Silicon Valley hub, Fintech hub and IT parks. Also, the government is mulling to introduce IT education from school level to retain the talent of Bengal within the state," said Sen.

He also informed that West Bengal Electronics Industry Development Corporation Limited (WEBEL) has already set up an animation academy to improve the skills of youths to cope up with the digital content demand in India.

In the academy, a one-year diploma course has been introduced. The first batch that consists of 22 students will complete their course soon. However, before completing the course they have already got the job as a private company who is the knowledge partner of Webel has already hired all 22 students. Sources informed that the Webel animation academy was started during 2007-08. But it became weaker since 2013. Last year state government has decided to revamp the academy in order to create job in the state.

Also, during the programme a whitepaper on emerging technologies for digital transformation in India was released.

The paper discussed the adoption of emerging technologies in India and came up with several recommendations for a better and accelerated way ahead.
